Alaska Gold & Silver Mining (Alaska Territory) 1874. Mines located on Baranoff Island, Alaska. Offices in Portland, Oregon. 250 shares. Issued, not cancelled. No.410. A magnificent view of the Alaskan wilderness occupies almost two thirds of the entire certificate. A sailing ship lies just off a beach occupied by seals. Trees and mountains are in the distance. The vignette is "signed" by T. J. Pettit S.F." Issued seven years after the acquisition of Alaska from Russia, and over a quarter of a century before the rich gold discoveries of the Klondike era. Only one other has appeared at auction, estimated at $3.000-$5,000. That example was moderately stained, and did not sell. According to Archives International, only three were discovered. This may well be the finest of the three. A. L. Stinson, Printer, Salem, Massachusetts. VF+. Punch holes at, right, used to store the certificates in a binder (not cancellations).
