North Missouri Rail Road (Missouri) 1858. Jefferson. $1000. Six% Thirty Year Gold Bond. Issued, not cancelled. No.3768. Blue $1000. Spectacular full-width vignette of the St. Louis riverfront with a mile-long string of steamboats nestled against the shore, extending across the entire top of the bond. A similar vignette shows what appears to be East St. Louis, extending across the entire bottom. An Indian family and a boiler maker and train flank the text. Full text of the Act that authorized these bonds is on the back. Signed by Robert M. Stewart (1815-1871), railroad president and Governor of Missouri. Opponents charged him with using his railroad influence to gain votes in the election. Stewart was drawn into the problems of "bleeding Kansas" and the Missouri secessionists. Issued to complete the North Missouri Railroad in 1858. I. Gast & Bro. lith St. Louis. VF. Small pieces of the upper border are missing, and there is some bleed through from ink notations on the back, but this is typical for this issue. Still one nicest of perhaps four known to this cataloger. We sold a similar example for $1,300 in our January 2016 auction.
