Issued to Messiers Fremont & Morton and signed on the back by John C. Freemont. John Charles Frémont was an early explorer and mapmaker of the American West, and one of the principal figures responsible for opening that region to settlement. He was instrumental in the U.S. conquest and development of California. Freemont ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. presidency in 1856 as the first candidate of the newly formed Republican Party.
