Auction: 324 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale
Lot: 864
South Carolina. R.E. Russell. Columbia. 12 ½ Cents Token, 1837. Struck in Feuchtwanger's German Silver Alloy. HT 309 (R5), Low 128. R.E. RUSSELL, rosettes below, I.O.U. 12 1/2c., stars, rev. Eagle right, talons on snake, date below. This very rare Hard Times token, the only one to bear the unique value 12 ½ Cents, had long been attributed to NY because of its Feuchtwanger association. But research by Aaron Packard has shown it to be an issue of Robert E. Russell of Columbia, S.C. Russell operated Botany Garden in Columbia, which included a public bath. Minor die flaw upper reverse periphery. Very Fine. Another VF specimen fetched $2,115 in the June 2011 Steve Hayden sale.
