5th (Princess Charlotte of Wales) Dragoon Guards Officer's 1818-1834 Pattern Helmet. Regency-early Victorian era. Roman-style helmet with the skull and peaks black-painted steel or iron with gilt edging, and black comb topped by bearskin crest. Gilt front plate -- radiant plaque with four Napoleonic battle honors on rays: VITTORIA SALAMANCA TOULOUSE PENINSULA, George IV crown over Hanoverian Arms at center, banner inscribed 5TH. OR.P.C. OF WALES DRAGOON GUARDS around. Large laurel spray on back. Gilt lion heads either side suspend gilt, velvet-lined overlapping pointed chin scales. Green leather-line front and rear peak, wide red leather sweat band with short red silk lining. Replacement bearskin pristine, moderate wear on the high points and minute verdigris in protected areas of the gilt components. Typical staining of sweat band. Overall very well-preserved. A magnificent helmet. Ex Hammatt Collection.
