James Jerome Hill was the chief executive officer of the Great Northern Railway, which served the Upper Midwest, the northern Great Plains, and the Pacific Northwest. Because of the vast areas his railroads extended across, and the economic power he exerted he became known as "The Empire Builder." His autograph on stocks and bonds is very rare, and has achieved realizations within the estimate range on the few occasions it has been offered at auction.
