Dickens, Charles (1812-1870). Immortal English novelist and social critic. ALS, 8vo. Gads Hill Place, Higham by Rochester, Kent. April 27, 1870. To Archibald Wilson, a bookseller in Poughkeepsie, NY, thanking him for sending a book of poems. Included is the original envelope bearing the "C. D." imprint, mounted on a card. Also included is a cabinet card by Gurney & Son, Fifth Avenue, NY with Dickens, full length, holding a book. Dickens had little formal education and a difficult childhood. His father was sent to debtor's prison, and he had to go to work in a blacking factory. These experiences are reflected in his best works which include The Pickwick Papers, Oliver Twist, David Copperfield, Nicholas Nickleby, A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, A Christmas Carol, and numerous others, still popular today. "Dear Sir, Please accept my thanks for your Kind remembrance in sending me a copy of your father's poems. For which, and for your pleasant note, I am much indebted to you. Faithfully yours, Charles Dickens."Probably the best known author of the 19th century. This letter would have been one of the last things Dickens wrote. He died of a stroke just six weeks later.

From the collection of Diana Herzog.
