Canada. Bradbury Wilkinson Printer's Archival Photographic Essays for Proposed, but Never Issued, "Double Size" Bank of Montreal 1910 Note. Original vintage sepia photographic images of front and back Specimens. $50. 2-1-10-1910. 186 x 160 mm. Indians flank shield. Portrait of Donald Smith, left. G. Drummond, right. Seated woman holds out wreath at lower right. Main Montreal Branch building on the back. In 1903, the Bank of Montreal issued $50 and $100 notes printed by Waterlow & Sons that were "double size." There was some precedent for this unusual issue, as banks in England did this for their large denomination notes. The experiment proved to be short-lived, and only four of the original Bank of Montreal 1903 "double size" notes are reported to exist in public or private hands. Unlisted in the Standard Catalog, Bradbury Wilkinson produced two different "double size" $50 designs for the Bank of Montreal in 1910. The printer's archival photographic image in this lot, and the example in the previous lot may be the only surviving evidence of these magnificent and unusual notes.
