'In recognition of gallant conduct in the performance of military duties.'

4850180 Lance-Corporal Herbert Roger Cantrill, B.E.M., of 'C' Company, 1st Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment, was awarded the Medal of the Order of the British Empire for bravery at an ambush at Lough Rea, Co. Roscommon, in October 1920. Lieutenant S.J. Hodson and Private Bradley were wounded on the same occasion. (Regimental history refers).

Note: The Medal of the Order of the British Empire was awarded between 1917 and 1922, when it was superseded by the British Empire Medal. An additional statue published in the London Gazette 22.4.1941 stated that the original Medal of the Order of the British Empire was henceforth also to be known as the British Empire Medal, and in a further statue published in the London Gazette 10.6.1942 recipients were entitled to use the post-nominal letters B.E.M.
