Netherlands East Indies. Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie (VOC), Batavia. Batavian Crown of 48 Stivers (Bataviase Kroon of Reaal van 48 Stuivers), 1645. 39 mm. 23.29 gms. Cast Silver. Upright sword, blade over laurel wreath whose ribbon ends flank hilt guard, within braided central circle; (floriate scroll) ANNO o 1645 (floriate scroll) BATAVIAE, rev. VOC monogram, value o48oSTo above, countermark initial "C" stamped to right of monogram, old inked catalog number "34" below, within braided central circle, four floriate scrolls around in outer border. This example shows a typical slightly irregular faceted edge. Jan Ferman and Conjok, working for the VOC, produced the 1645 Crowns, Half Crowns and Quarter Crowns in a mold, then used hand shears to smooth the edges after casting. Medium gray. About Extremely Fine and Extremely Rare. Only 11 examples of the 1645 Crown are known - four of them in the collections of public institutions. Another example of this coin, which had been retooled (NGC EF 45) realized $115,000 in the Goldberg's Millennia Sale, May 2008.
