Portugal. Dom Afonso Henriques - Afonso I, "the Conqueror" (1139-1185). Billon Dinheiro. 0.73 gms. Seal of Solomon (Star of David), pellet at center; ALF'ONSIIS, rev. Long cross, flanked by V at left and "T" on its side top facing inward, within beaded circle the top broken by the cross; I REX POR'. Gomes 06.01. The replacement of the pentagram on the obverse with the Star of David or Solomonic seal may well be indicative of a Jewish moneyer. King Afonso I appointed Yahia Ben Yahi III, a Sephardic Jew from Cordova, as Supervisor of Tax Collection and also nominated him the first Chief Rabbi of Portugal. Afonso's son, Sancho I continued his father's policy and made Jose Ben Yahia, Rabbi Yahia's grandson, High Steward of the realm. Extremely rare and important with apparently only two to three known. Deep gray. Somewhat crude. About Extremely Fine.
