Kings of Egypt. Ptolemy II Philopator (285-246 BC). AR Tetradrachm, year 33 (254/3 BC). Gaza. 13.92 gms. Diademed head of Ptolemy right wearing aegis, rev. Eagle standing left on thunderbolt, Gazan monogram above ?A monogram in right field, (?)? above ? in left field. Cf.BMC 142 (year 30). The ? in the date is apparently not struck up. Under Ptolemy II, the Gaza mint was active largely to produce coinage to support military operations against the Seleukids in the Second Syrian War (261-253 BC) and to pay for the peace agreement which ended the conflict. Near Extremely Fine and Rare.
