U.S. Labor lot: Sidney Hillman (1887-1946), head of the Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America (ACWA), key figure in the founding of the Congress of Industrial Organizations. Typed Letter signed "Sidney Hillman". One page on Russian-American Industrial Corporation letterhead, June 23, 1923. Hillman writes to Mr. A. Krasnoshchokoff, in the corporation's Moscow office to introduce Edward A. Filene, head of one of Boston's largest department stores, who is visiting Russia on the advice of Hillman. The Russian-American Industrial Corporation was the product of Hillman's visit to the Soviet Union in 1921 there he established a cooperative commercial venture between an organization of American shareholders and various Soviet state manufacturing trusts. The initial capital for the venture came from the ACWA. RAIC's Soviet partner was the All-Russian Clothing Syndicate. Along with the signed letter is Hillman's autograph on a small card dated July 16, 1940 (tape residue on back); William Green, president of the American Federation of Labor (1924-1952). Autograph across strip of 3 One Cent postage stamps; John G. Winant (1889-1947), governor of New Hampshire, first head of Social Security, head of the International Labor Office in Geneva. His autograph across a 3 Cent James R. Lowell stamp with letter signed by the International Labor Organization's D.C. branch director which was sent with the autograph (affixed to letter).
