Victoria (1837-1901). "Gothic" Florin, 1872. Die Cap. Obverse inset "a la deep-dish" within raised cap of 6+mm. Gothic-style bust l. and legend, rev. Gothic cruciform cross - shallow and "stretched" from striking error; the legends neatly flowing around curved edge of the raised cap walls. S.3893, KM 746.2. A die cap occurs when a coin in the minting process sticks to the die through many strikes. As a result the metal flows up around the die with the coin taking on the shape of a bottle cap. They are among the most colorful and desirable of mint errors, and the coin here is an exceptional example. It is hard to imagine how such a notable error could have escaped the Royal Mint. The most probable explanation would be that it was kept as a souvenir by a mint official or foreman. Some obverse hairlines. Pearly silver with soft russet highlights. Uncirculated. Exceedingly Rare and possibly unique.
