George B. McClellan was named General in Chief by President Lincoln in November 1861. McClellan directed the Peninsular Campaign and won at Antietam. When McClellan failed pursue Lee's army, President Lincoln lost confidence in him. In 1864, McClellan was the unsuccessful Democratic candidate for President.
