William Henry Vanderbilt (1821-1885) succeeded his father Cornelius, a railroad tycoon, as president of the company in 1877, having been vice president since it's purchase in 1864. The New York and Harlem was merged with the Hudson River Railroad in 1869 to form the New York Central and Hudson River Railroad, which later developed into the New York Central Railroad system, over which Vanderbilt had control.
