Johns Hopkins was an entrepreneur, abolitionist, and philanthropist.
Hopkins, along with three of his brothers established Hopkins and Brothers Wholesalers in 1819. This company became extremely prosperous. Most of the family's fortune, which later funded Johns Hopkins University, resulted from investing in a series of ventures, the most notable being the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad.
