Civil War; New York History. An interesting pair: Soldiers Bounty Fund Bond No.3 Bond for $5,000, New York, March 4, 1865. Bright blue, red impressed seal lower left, Civil War scene at top -- officers and troops on the march. Signed by C.G. Gunther as Mayor lower left. Charles Godfrey Gunther (Democrat) was New York's mayor from 1864-1866. It is ironic that he is the signor of this Union Bond as he was pro-Southern. Signed at lower right by Matthew T. Brennan as Comptroller. Brennan would go to be Sheriff of New York and to fame as the man who arrested Boss Tweed.. Rare type. Good Very Fine-Extremely Fine; and Civil War Letter from a Union Soldier to his Mother, "Near Burkesville, Va.", April 14, 1865. 3 pages on folded 7 x 8 7/8" paper. E.A. Stebbins of the Vermont Volunteers writes his mother neatly in pencil. After inquiring about her and the family, Stebbins writes "…You have read all about what we have done so I need not write it. This Brig. was in the advance & broke the rebel lines first. It was a glorious day I assure you. Such cheering you never heard. We were tired at night -- & indeed have been ever since. But we are in good spirits & do not mind being tired & hungry if we can close this war. I see by the papers that there was great rejoicing at the north over our success…we who fight feel as well about it as those who stay at home…I hope the fighting is done…". Stebbins wrote this letter on the same day, unbeknownst to him, that President Lincoln was assassinated. Fine-Very Fine. [2]
