Rockefeller, John Davison. Business magnate, at his time one of the world's richest men and America's first billionaire, revolutionized the petroleum industry, co-founder of Standard Oil, philanthropist. Autograph Document Signed "JD Rockefeller". Founding Shares Certificate for 10,000 Shares of the Standard Oil Trust, issued to J.D. Rockefeller, 5 April 1882. Rockefeller signs on the front as having received, and again as President, along with H.M. Flagler as Secretary. In 1863, John D. Rockefeller and produce commission business partner Maurice B. Clark built an oil refinery in Cleveland. The refinery was owned by Andrews, Clark and Co. - Maurice, Rockefeller, chemist Samuel Andrews and Maurice Clark's two brothers. Rockefeller bought out the Clark Brothers in auction for $72,500 in February 1865, establishing the firm of Rockefeller & Andrews. John's brother, William built another refinery in 1866 and brought John into the partnership. Henry M. Flagler became a partner in 1867, making the firm Rockefeller, Andrews & Flagler, the predecessor of Standard Oil -- formed by John D. Rockefeller in June 1870.
