Grant, Ulysses S.. Eighteenth President of the United States (1869-1877), career soldier, Commandeer of all Union Armies during the Civil War; often criticized for the scandals during his term as president, Grant proved to be above all a noble and conscientious leader of strong character, as president, he enforced civil rights laws, won passage of the 15th Amendment, created the Board of Indian Commissioners and attempted to provide justice for native Americans. Autograph Manuscript Signed "U.S. Grant" as president. A handwritten receipt for a donation to the Rawlins Fund on one-third page, 7 ¾ x 4 1/3", lined paper, Washington, [D.C.], Nov.27, 1869. Grant writes "Received at the hands of General Butterfield one Thousand Dollars, being the subscription of the Adams Express Co to the Rawlins Fund." John Aaron Rawlins (1831-1869) served as Grant's aide-de-camp during the Civil War and became his confidant. He was promoted to Brigadier General and brevetted Major General April 9, 1865. After Grant's election as president, Rawlins became Secretary of State, but died of tuberculosis less than half a year into office. A benevolent fund was set up for Rawlins' second wife, Mary Hurlburt Rawlins and his children. Gen. Daniel Butterfield (1831-1901) served as Maj. Gen. Joseph Hooker's chief of staff during the Civil War and was himself promoted to major general in March 1863; he was awarded the Medal of Honor for his action June 27, 1862 at Gaines Mill, Virginia - seizing 'the colors of the 83rd Pennsylvania Volunteers at a critical moment and, under a galling fire of the enemy, encouraged the depleted ranks to renewed exertion.' On the recommendation of Grant's brother-in-law, Butterfield was appointed Assistant U.S. Treasurer. But his involvement in the Black Friday (Sept. 24, 1869) gold scandal led to his resignation a month before this receipt was made. Following his resignation, he became active in business and banking.
