American lawyer and politician, last alcade and first mayor of San Francisco, Territorial Governor of Kansas, Union general in the Civil War distinguishing himself in command during the Battle of Lookout Mountain, the Atlanta Campaign, Sherman's March to the Sea, and the Carolina's Campaign; oversaw the surrender of Savannah and served briefly as the city's military governor; Governor of Pennsylvania (1867-1873). Autograph Document Signed "Jno.W. Geary" as Governor of Pennsylvania. Certificate of Adjudicated Claim for War Damages (No. 2281) of Joseph Arnold for $270 sustained "during the late rebellion", Jan. 1, 1872. Settlement vignette in frame supported by horses upper center, general's portrait bottom center. Geary signs lower right, embossed seal lower left.
