Arrival of the U-Boat `Deutschland' in Baltimore Harbor, July 9, 1916. Medal in the shape of an iron cross. Iron. 74.5mm across, 13mm thick. Date "9. JULI / 1916' top and bottom arm each side. At the center is a 29mm brass inset. Depicted on it is the Deutschland's Captain Paul König, rev. Submarine at center, commemorative legend around. The Deutschland was the first German submarine to cross the Atlantic. The 790-ton cargo vessel was 230 feet in length and carried a crew of four officers and 25 men. It left for Baltimore on June 18, 1916, transporting 750 tons of medicinal and coal-tar dye products. Captain König eluded the British ships patrolling off the Virginia coast, navigated the Chesapeake Bay and docked the sub at Locust Point on the west side of Baltimore's Inner Harbor on July 9. These interesting cruciform medals were presented to executives from American companies to create and cement business relationships with the U-boat firm. The brass inset toned. About Extremely Fine.
