Auction: 321 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale and Stocks and Bonds of the Americas
Lot: 676
1907 $10 Indian. With Periods. Wire Rim, Starred Edge. Judd 1774. NGC MS64.Lovely lemon yellow, characteristic of this issue.
In response to President Roosevelt's inpassioned plea to rid America of what he felt was our "attrociously hideous" coinage, Augustus St. Gaudens created this design for the new series of $10 gold coins to be issued in 1907. 500 of this new type were initially struck, and most were handed out as souvenirs for visiting dignitaries and congressmen. When the U.S. Mint finally went into full production, Augustus St. Gaudens original design was altered by Charles Barber, the Mint Engraver, and the regular issued coins no longer had the bold relief or some of the details that grace our current example.
