CSA: Set of Chemicograph Backs Intended for Confederate Currency. Set of six Chemicographs backs with designs intended for the Feb. 17, 1864 Confederate issue of the $5, $10, $20, $50, $100 and $500 denominations. Chemicograph plates were ordered by the Treasury Department of the CSA from S. Straker and Sons, engravers, London. They were shipped out from there in January 1864 but all disappeared. Further shipments, meanwhile, were all stopped by Union blockades. Examples of the plates were located some 75 years later and a limited number of sets of prints were struck from them. These prints here are from this small group. Because of their historical importance, the plates were then donated to the Smithsonian Institute. The set is accompanied by a reprint of Philip Chase's March-April 1950 Numismatist article on the Chemicographs and an information sheet. The backs grade Choice About Uncirculated to Uncirculated. In the original 1959 SDC Packet envelope (which has some tears, backflap etc). [Set of 6]
