Germany. Hohenlohe. Order of the Phoenix. Knight's Cross, ca. 1815. Unsigned. Gold and enamels. 37.5 x 30mm. White enameled cross with EX FLA CLA RIOR in gold letters on its arms. Finely painted central medallion depicts white phoenix rising from the flames on green ground against a blue field, red enamel ring around. Crowned gold monogram reverse center. On what appears to be original ribbon. Minor chip white enamel on back. High quality workmanship. Good Very Fine; accompanied by an original French "Permission to Wear" the Hohenlohe Order Document dated Grand Chancellerie de L'Ordre Royal, Paris, 12 April 1817. Signed by Marshal Etienne Jacques MacDonald, Duke of Taranto, as Chancellor of the Order of the Légion d'Honneur. Embossed seal to the left. Jacques MacDonald (1765-1840) was born in Sedan, France to an exiled Scottish Jacobite family. He joined the Irish Legion in the Dutch Republic and then the French army, serving with distinction in Holland and Italy before being unfairly disgraced. He was later restored to favor and earned a battlefield commission for the rank of Marshall as reward for rescuing the French Army's left flank at the Battle of Wagram in 1809. The [French] awardee's name deliberately cut from document and only partially legible. Otherwise Very Fine. Rare pair. Ex Peter Maren Collection. (2)
