Sweden/Norway. S.A. Andrées North Pole Balloon Expedition 1897/Fridtjof Nansen's North Pole Expedition, 1893-1896. Medal, 1896(7). 50mm. White Metal. By Augustus Högel. Inset portrait of Andrée, balloon soaring before him, globe below, rev. Inset portrait of Nansen over his ship Fram. Bad weather forced the postponement of Andrée's balloon expedition in 1896 to the next year. On July 11, 1897, Andrée, and crewmen Nils Strindberg and Knut Fraenkel left from Spitzbergen and vanished. Their remains were discovered only by chance in 1930 in remote Kvitøya by the Norwegian vessel Bratvaag. Malpas 156. Rare. With original "Hvem af de Tva" roundel case (lid only, missing bottom).
