Auction: 320 - The Numismatic Collector's Series Sale and the Forest Park Collection
Lot: 1328
South Carolina. 1788. 10 Pounds. Fr. SC-185. "TUTA PEDAMINE VIRTUTUS" (HONOR SAFE IN ITS SUPPORT) appears in an arch above palm tree, flags, and cannons. The text reads "PURSUANT to the Act for raising Supplies for the Year 1788, this SPECIAL INDENT of TEN POUNDS shall be received in Payment of Taxes." Signed by James Ballentine and John Devaux at right, and countersigned by William Hork, at left. Ornate indent and top and bottom borders.
These Special Indents were issued under an Act for Raising Supplies for the Year One Thousand Seven Hundred and Eighty-Eight. The State used these notes to pay for supplies, and accepted them for payment of taxes on land, buildings, and slaves ("The sum of nine shillings and four pence shall be levied on all negroes and other slaves whatsoever....").
No examples from the 1788 South Carolina series appeared in Ford. No examples from this series are priced in Newman, and he indicates no auction appearances. Rare, and perhaps unique. A real trophy for the most discriminating collector of South Carolina paper money.
