Theatre opened in 1863 named after the Civil Governor but name changed to Sautro, a patron of the arts, who contributed to its construction and whose signature appears on the certificate. Theatre attracted many famous artists including Sarah Bernhardt, Anna Pavlova and Enrico Caruso. Still functions today and has become a symbol of the city.
