The Cuban-American Sugar Company was established by R.B. Hawley in 1899 and operated on 70,000 acres of land from their mill named 'Chaparra'. American James H. Post, president of the National Sugar Refining Company of New Jersey, held the role of vice presidentas well as Director for the National City Bank of New York and the American Colonial Bank of Puerto Rico.
