Civil War U.S. Veterans Medal. Brass and holed for suspension at 12:00. This unissued medal was designed to be engraved with the battles in which the awarded veteran had participated. The obverse periphery reads FOUGHT IN BATTLES.*1861, 2 & 3. UNITED STATES*. The center displays horizontal lines whereupon the names of pertinent battles would be placed. The reverse is completely blank, and in all likelihood was meant to bear the name, rank, and outfit in which the soldier had served. Undoubtedly quite scarce.
