Poet, journalist, novelist and bibliophile; known for Thaïs, Penguin Island, The Gods are Athirst and many other works; member of the Académie Française, winner of the Nobel Prize for literature, 1921; considered in his day, the ideal French man of letters; signatory of Emile Zola´s manifesto in support of Alfred Dreyfus in the infamous Dreyfus Affair. His childhood memoire, "Le Petit Pierre". Paris, Calmann-Lévy, 1918. Paperback with quarter leather and blue cloth weave slip jacket. Signed on front endpaper "A mon illustre confrére George Middleton homage Anatole France". It is likely that his dedication is to the American playwright George Middleton (1880-1967).
