                        Civil War: Edward Hatch Civil War Union general (1832-99); participated in Grierson´s raid into Mississippi; opposed NB Forrest in Tennessee; an Indian fighter after the war. ALS "Edward Hatch / Bt. Major Genl. / USA," 1-3/4 pages, 4to, St. Louis Depot, January 4, 1873. He thanks US Secretary of War WW Belknap "for the kindness...in giving us this delightful station, also for the consideration shown me...It is the hope of the Army as well as the Country at large, that you retain the present position..." in US Grant´s second term, which was to begin in March. Inlaid to slightly larger sheet. Light toning, VG.
