Civil War: Union Documents Partly printed Official Pass Signed by Assistant Adjutant General James A Hardin by command of Maj Gen George B McClellan, 1 page, 2.3" x 3.75", Headquarters Army of the Patomac, December 16, 1861, permitting JC Spencer to go to Alexandria (VA) and return "for this day." Soiling, VG. With printed General Orders, No. 47," 1/3 page, 8vo, Headquarters Army of the Potomac, Camp near Falmouth, VA, April 30, 1863. Assistant Adjutant General S Williams announces by the command of Gen Joseph Hooker "that the operations of the last three days, have determined that our enemy must either ingloriously fly, or come out from behind his defences and give us battle...where certain destruction awaits him." Fold wear, toning, VG. The enemy, under Robert E Lee, did indeed give battle to Hooker´s much larger army, and the ensuing Battle of Chancellorsville would become known as Lee´s most impressive victory of the war.
