American Express Co (NY), $500 shares, 186(5), #1637, signed by Henry Wells as president, bald eagle atop garter bearing motto "Safety & Dispatch" with dog guarding key at center with background vignette of train, horse cart, freight, and ships, shields with eagle and liberty cap at left, R24 upper left, share increase handstamps at top right and middle left, unevenly toned, with fold wear, left edge trimmed into border, overall VF. Henry Wells (1805-78) had formed American Express with William Fargo and others in 1850. Just two years later, when some of his partners refused to extend their express service to California, Wells Fargo was formed by the two eponymous partners and other investors. By 1868 he had resigned from both companies to turn his attention to philanthropy.
