Union Quartz Mountain Mining and Crushing (CA), One $200 share, Yuba County, 1851, #101, eagle, ornate border, black, transfered twice on verso a month later, in San Francisco, edge wear including small closed margin tears, toning, good VF. Mine located at "Wolf Creek, three miles south of Nevada" (County). Though mining stocks from California are readily available, very few can be found that are as early as this. The California gold rush lasted from 1849 to about 1855. At the time this certificate was issued it was still possible for an enterprising person to make a small fortune mining gold, but it was becoming clear that only larger enterprises would be able to turn a profit mining gold deeper in the earth once the placers had scoured all that was near the surface.
