Thomas C Durant (1820-85) was one of the most ruthless and shrewd figures in American financial history, manipulating the stock market, the government, and his own Union Pacific Railroad to increase his personal fortune; luck caught up with him and he lost a bundle in the Panic of 1873, spending the rest of his life embroiled in lawsuits with former partners.
