The block of four of the «Vervelle» with the tête-bêche position DD-CC, brilliant colour with very good even margins, small natural inclusion on the lower left stamp, otherwise very fine with the tête-bêche in superb condition. A very rare and beautiful exhibition item of the highest quality. Provenance : ex Ferrari 11ème vente Novembre 1924 lot 59 : ex Hind vente Harmer Octobre 1934 lot 38 : ex Champion et Ballat Commentaire: Un des cinq tête-bêche du 1fr vermillon, ce dernier de couleur vermillon pâle provient des archives de Mr. Vervelle, négociant en Philatélie à la fin du XIXème siècle. Tous les timbres de cette provenance étaient sans gomme. Il fut directement vendu à Mr. Ferrari au tournant du siècle par Mr. Champion et réalisa la somme de 200.500 Frs à la vente de 1924 organisée par Mr. Gilbert, ce qui en fit jusqu'en 1931, date de la découverte du bloc de 22, le timbre le plus cher de France. Cette pièce est reproduite dans le catalogue Yvert spécialisé 2000. One of the five vermilion tête-bêches known, this distinctive shade came from the archives of the stamp dealer Mr Vervelle at the end of the 19th Century. All the know examples are without gum. The block was sold by Mr Champion to Baron Ferrari and was then sold in the Ferrari auction of 1924 for 200,500 Frs. Until the discovery of the block of 22 of the Vermilion in 1931, this block was the most valuable item of French philately. Illustrated in the Yvert Specialised Catalogue 2000.
