Lot: 93

1918 (11 Oct.) stampless envelope with original enclosure sent via "Soldiers mail" from a private serving in the American Expeditionary Force in Siberia and cancelled with a fair strike of the temporary type X duplex dated 14th October and showing a faint strike of large boxed "a.e.f. siberia/censored" handstamp, signed by the censor. A fine example of this short-lived useage, very scarce Estimate £ 300-400 Note: The first Americal troops of the A.E.F. arrived in Siberia in September 1918. The authorisation for the establoshment of a postal agency soon followed. Because no special datestamp was immediately available, a steel handstamp from the Shanghai was used from 25th September until a correct handstamp could be supplied. This temporary measure was only operational for three weeks, until 17th October.
