†1864 (21 July) stampless wrapper to San Francisco "Via Hongkong" bearing Shanghai Paid despatch c.d.s. in red, manuscript "4", "4" and "8" (combined Shanghai and Hong Kong rates) rate marks plus good strikes of double circle San Francisco arrival c.d.s., handstruck "10" and straight-line "foreign" in large capitals, the reverse with Shanghai and Hong Kong c.d.s. struck in blue. A good Pacific mail cover showing the United States 10c. rate. This marking was only used in 1864, rare Estimate £ 800-1,000 Note that a similar cover (from Japan) was offered in the Ishikawa sale, arriving in San Francisco ten days after this, it was thought to have been carried on the U.S. Navy ship 'Delaware'. The long transit time of this mail may be explained by a detour via either Manila or Hawaii, which would be expected for a naval ship. This could have been a precursor to the Pacific route rate inaugurated in 1867
