Hong Kong 1880 10c. on 16c. variety surcharge double, cancelled by a light strike of Shanghai "S1" in black; the variety is partly obscured by the postmark but is quite evident on the figures of value. A fresh and fine example of one of the great rarities of Hong Kong philately. R.P.S. Certificate (2003). S.G. 26b, £50,000. Photo Estimate HK$ 350,000-450,000 This recent discovery is only the third example of this error to be recorded, all are cancelled by Shanghai "S1". Each shows similar 1.5mm horizontal shift of the surcharge, though the vertical shift varies from zero to the 0.4mm of this copy, showing that there is slight twisting of the second surcharge across the pane. We are proud to have offered both of the other examples in November 1996 (HK$500,000) and February 2003 (£55,000). Although the variety is not quite as obvious on this example, it is in finer condition
