An R.F.C. Pilot's Group of Three to Captain C.P. Bertie, Royal Flying Corp, Late Royal Field Artillery

On the morning of 19.3.1917, 59 Squadron sent two of their RE8s on a morning patrol in the vicinity of St. Leger. A4165, delegated to reconnaisance work, was crewed by Captain E.W. Bowyer-Bower and Second Lieutenant E. Elgey whilst the other, A4168, crewed by Captain C. P. Bertie and Second Lieutenant F.H. Wilson, was to act as escort.
Werner Voss, accompanied by Otto Bernert in another Jasta 2 engaged the two British planes, Bernert shooting down the escort RE8 - his eighth victory, while Voss disposed of the reconnaissance plane. Three of the four R.F.C. men, including Captain Bertie, were killed, and 2nd Lieutenant F.H. Wilson was taken prisoner. Captain Bertie is buried at Mory Abbey, France.
