Auction: 3016 - Orders, Medals, Decorations & Militaria
Lot: 403
An Officer's Uniform of The Rifle Brigade.
A very fine braided patrol jacket by Pulford & Sons, 65 St James's Street, with black velvet facings, mohair braid and Russia edging, five loops of black square cord each side in front, fastened with olivets, braided backseams and plume ornament below collar, plaited black chain-gimp shoulder-cords, the tailor's label named to Lieut. RLH Collins, Rifle Brigade; together with a set of black cord busby-lines; and a pair of black twill pantaloons for a mounted officer, with wide black braid stripes and suede strappings to knee (3)
See note on Lt Col Collins at Lot 376.
Rifle regiments continued to wear patrol-jackets (superficially very similar to their Full Dress tunics) in lieu of the Universal Pattern frock coat, up to 1914. It is possible that they were contemplating a change to a dark green version of the frock coat (of which at least one example is known) when such concerns were overtaken by the outbreak of war.
