The Crimea Medal to Private A. Wright V.C., 77th (Duke of Cambridge's Own) Regiment, Awarded the Victoria Cross for Conspicuous Gallantry at the Rifle Pitts, Sebastopol.
Crimea 1854-56, three clasps, Alma, Inkermann, Sebastopol (No. 2239. Alexander. Wright. 77. Foot.), regimentally impressed, hinged fitment to backstrap of Sebastopol clasp, small metal plate applied to below obverse bust, nearly very fine
Victoria Cross London Gazette 24.02.1857 " Alexander Wright , Private, No. 2239, 77th Regt. For conspicuous bravery through the whole Crimean War. Highly distinguished on the night of 22 March, 1855, in repelling a sortie. Highly distinguished at the taking of the Rifle Pitts on the night of the 19 April, 1855; remarked for the great encouragement he gave the men while holding the Pitts under a terrible fire. He was wounded. Highly distinguished on 30 Aug. 1855."
Private Alexander Wright, V.C., born Ballymena, County Antrim Ireland, 1826. The 77th Regiment return home from the Crimea in July 1856, and in June the following year was dispatched to New South Wales, Australia. Here Wright was decorated with the Victoria Cross by the General Officer Commanding the forces early in the new year. Private Wright accompanied his Regiment to India in 1858, where it landed during the closing months of the Mutiny. He died 28.07.1858 in Calcutta, India.
