Military Medal, G.VI.R. (3311619 L. Sjt. A. Macdonald. H.L.I.), nearly extremely fine
M.M. London Gazette 1.3.1945 Lance Sergeant Alexander MacDonald, 10th Battalion, The Highland Light Infantry.
The Recommendation states: 'On Tuesday 19th September 1944 L/Sjt MacDonald was in charge of a section of the Carrier Platoon which advanced dismounted at night to take up a position on the outer perimeter of the bridgehead north of Gheel on the Escaut Canal. At first light on the morning of the 20th September 1944 it was found that the Carrier Platoon and the Company on their left hand had advanced beyond the line of the objective and that the position was under heavy fire at very short range from 20 MM and 88 MM. The Carrier Platoon being on the right received the brunt of the fire, and had heavy casualties. They were ordered to withdraw to the line of the objective. L/Sjt MacDonald was the senior NCO left unwounded (his Platoon officer also having been wounded). He succeeded in withdrawing under extreme fire the unwounded men and then returned and assisted by the other unwounded men carried back five wounded. In so doing he was slightly wounded in the head but after treatment at the RAP returned to duty. L/Sjt MacDonald showed initiative and courage in the face of extreme conditions and did so in the knowledge that his brother had been killed at his side two days before.'
