Auction: 284 - Bond, Share & Americana Mailbid & Internet Exclusive
Lot: 985
Posters: 1844 Election - Great large pro-Clay print, ca 23.5" x 14.25", tinted, showing Whig candidate Henry Clay in caricature, either flailing [they seem to have a shared brush tail!] or preparing to devour diminutive caricatures of his likely Democratic rivals: Martin Van Buren, John C. Calhoun, and Richard M. Johnson (though we´re only sure of Van Buren). This must have been printed before the May 27, 1844 Democratic convention, when surprise candidate James K. Polk was chosen. Toned, with some foxing at edges, one large closed tear at lower right, smaller ones at edges, with some loss at top, but for its age, G/VG. Estimate US$ 50-75
