Willkie, Wendell American presidential candidate (1892-1944); a dark horse nominated by the Republicans to oppose Roosevelt in 1940, he suffered a lopsided electoral defeat; admired for putting principles above party, he was not renominated in 1944. Interesting TLS "Wendell Willkie," 1/3 page, 4to, on address-imprinted stationery, NYC, 6/19/1944. Just a month before the Republican convention, he writes Mrs. Booccok of Keswick, VA, "...I feel very deeply about the principles for which I have been fighting and though I have asked my friends to desist from any activity in behalf of my nomination, you may be sure that I will continue to work for those principles..." Very Good. He died unexpectedly just five months later. Estimate US$ 50-75
