Washington, Booker T. American educator and author (1856-1915); born a slave, he founded the Tuskegee Institute, which became the keystone of African American higher education; the first black man to dine at the White House, which he did at the invitation of Theodore Roosevelt. Brief TLS "Booker T. Washington" as principal, 2 lines, narrow oblong 8vo, on imprinted Tuskegee Institute stationery, 11/8/1904. He thanks Mr. Penney, Mr. Palmer, and Mr. Gibson "for the report which you submit covering the irregularities at the Salesroom." Age-toned, otherwise very good. Estimate US$ 100-150
