Rives, Amelie American novelist and playwright (1863-1945). ALS "Amelie Rives," 3 pages, small 8vo, Cobham, VA, April 17, 1888. She writes to a Mr. Cabell, "I am exceedingly sorry about the blank relating to my father...He neglected to fill it out. I am so sorry, for I think his name is fully worthy of record beside that of his father" and asks him to send her uncle the blank to complete for him. In a brief postscript, she asks him to also "ask my uncle to glance over the proof of my grandfather..." First page and blank integral page rather age-toned, with mounting traces in corners of blank integral page, and one stain on second page, otherwise VG. It was in 1888 that Miss Rives became a national sensation with the publication of her novel The Quick and the Dead. Just two months after writing this letter, she unexpectedly wed John Armstrong Chanler, an heir to the Astor fortune. The grandfather to which she refers was the diplomat and politician William Cabell Rives. Estimate US$ 50-75
