Granville Leveson-Gower, 2nd Earl Granville English statesman (1815-91); a noted leader of the Liberal Party, he is remembered most for his terms as Foreign Secretary, and for his opposition to British intervention in the US Civil War. ALS "Yours sincerely, Granville," 2pp, small 8vo, on address-imprinted stationery, Walmer Castle, Deal, [Kent, England], 4/12/1888. He informs Mr. Smalley that "Your charming note reached me here this morning. Many thanks for the compliment, which has all the ´tour´ which the French think exclusively belong to themselves..."
