Depew, Chauncey American lawyer, railroad president, and politician (1834-1928); US Senator from NY; president of the New York Central & Hudson River Railroad. Fine group, featuring an important TDS "Chauncey M. Depew" as president of the NYC & H, 1p, legal folio, NYC, 8/31/1893. He appoints "George C. Sherman of Watertown, N.Y...its attorney to present to the Carthage, Watertown & Sacketts Harbor Railroad Company, or its proper offices, a certificate of stock of the Carthage...dated October 1, 1872...for Three thousand (3000) shares of the Capital Stock of said...which stock...has been sold and transferred to the New York Central..." With embossed company seal at lower left and attached notarization on separate page. In fine condition. With a very early Endorsement Signature "C.M. Depew" on verso of a bank check on the Broadway Bank from the City of New York, 12/31/1868, drawn on the county treasury in the amount of $416, payable to Depew as Commissioner of Taxes. Signed by mayor "Thomas Coman". Very good. With a TLS "Chauncey M. Depew" as chairman of the New York Central, 1/3p, 4to, on his engraved stationery, NYC, 111/22/1913. He writes Adelaide Robb of Eldora, IA, that he has no examples of the late President William McKinley´s handwriting, but "...his late Secretary, Mr. Geo. B. Cortelyou, now President of the Consolidated Gas Company...or his intimate friend, Justice William R. Day of the Supreme Court" would be able to help. Very good.
